William Burden
American tenor William Burden has won an outstanding reputation in a wide-ranging repertoire throughout Europe and North America.
This season, Mr. Burden opens the San Francisco Opera season as Lindoro in L'Italiana in Algeri, and returns to both the Metropolitan Opera to create the role of Gilbert Griffiths in the world premiere of Tobias Picker's new opera, An American Tragedy, and to the Op�ra National de Paris for the revival of Julietta. He also makes his debuts at the Houston Grand Opera as Nerone in L'incoronazione di Poppea, and Madrid's Teatro Real as the Chevalier de la Force in Dialogues des Carm�lites.
Mr. Burden's recent opera engagements have included Pell�as in Pell�as et M�lisande, Janek in the Makropulos Case and Tybalt in Rom�o et Juliette at the Metropolitan Opera House; Gerald in Lakm� and Fenton in Falstaff at the Seattle Opera; the title role in Faust, Nadir in Les p�cheurs de perles, Alfredo in La Traviata, Ferrando in Cos� fan tutte, Nemorino in L'elisir d'amore, Tamino in Die Zauberfl�te, Tom Rakewell in the Rake's Progress, and Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus at the Opera Company of Philadelphia; Rom�o in Rom�o et Juliette at the Lyric Opera of Chicago; Giorgio in Passion at the Minnesota Opera; Lindoro, Paris in La Belle H�l�ne, and Benedict in B�atrice and B�n�dict at the Santa Fe Opera; Aschenbach in Death in Venice, Pylades in Iphig�nie en Tauride and the Male Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia at the Glimmerglass Opera; Tamino and Acis in Acis and Galatea at the New York City Opera; Michel in Julietta, Narraboth in Salome and Chevalier de la Force in Dialogues des Carmelites at the Op�ra National de Paris; Pell�as in a number of opera houses in France, Tom Rakewell at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich; Paris at the Th��tre du Ch�telet, and Chevalier de la Force at the Saito Kinen Festival with Seiji Ozawa
In concert, Mr. Burden has appeared with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Florida Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and Les Arts Florissants at the Th��tre des Champs-Elys�es, Barcelona and Lyon. Next season he returns to the Atlanta Symphony for performances of Mozart's Mass in C Minor with Donald Runnicles.
Mr. Burden's recording include Barber's Vanessa (Anatol) with the BBC Symphony Orchestra on the Chandos label and Musique adorable: The Songs of Emmanuel Chabrier for the Hyperion label.
Raised in Florida, Mr. Burden received his master's degree in Vocal Performance at Indiana University. He was also a member of the Merola Program in San Francisco and at the Apprentice Artists Program at the Santa Fe Opera.
